Mozilla on Thursday teamed with global partners in a push for open mobile standards as it ramps up its efforts to develop smartphones challenging Google and Apple operating systems.
The California-based nonprofit foundation joined Deutsche Telekom, Spain's Telefonica, South Korea's LG, US-based Qualcomm, and Chinese manufacturers ZTE and TCL/Alcatel in creating an Open Web Device Compliance Review Board.
The new entity will set technical standards for an open mobile operating system which would be an alternative to the closed systems now used in smartphones based on Apple's iOS or Google's Android.
The first smartphones using the Mozilla were launched earlier this year, made by China's ZTE and the small Spanish-based manufacturer GeeksPhone.

Mozilla, which is known for its open-source Firefox Web browser, is seen as having a tough order challenging the dominance of existing smartphone platforms.
But Mozilla's Andreas Gal said "users want a wide selection of devices and great apps."
Having uniform technical standards, Gal said, would help get new products to the market.
"This is the next step in building the ecosystem and will make it easier for partners to get a wide selection of high-quality solutions into consumers' hands quickly and efficiently," Gal added.
Qualcomm Technologies vice president Jason Bremner, said the technical body "will set a clear path for any organization to commercialize open Web devices."
Sales of the ZTE Firefox phone began this year in the US and Britain. The Mozilla Foundation claims to have at least 17 operators on board and plans to launch phones in Brazil, Hungary, Mexico, Montenegro, Poland and Serbia.

If a new report is to be believed, Samsung's rumoured Galaxy Note 3 Lite phablet entered mass-production on December 12.
Reports emerging from Korea suggest that Samsung has already started mass-producing the rumoured Galaxy Note 3 Lite and are targeting to reach 500,000 units by January 2014. Further, the report indicates that the South Korean has a target to reach 1,500,000 units of alleged Galaxy Note 3 Lite by February, and is aiming to reach 30 percent of Galaxy Note 3 sales.
Earlier a report had claimed that for the specifications of the rumoured Galaxy Note 3 Lite, the company was testing two different display sizes, 5.5-inch and 5.7-inch, while the screen technology was expected to be changed from Super AMOLED to LCD. However, the new report clears the theory and reveals that Samsung has finalised a 5.68-inch LCD display for the alleged Galaxy Note 3 Lite. As of now, there is no word on other specifications.
If reports are true, then Samsung seems to be planning to cash in the popularity of its premium Galaxy Note 3 by offering a 'Lite' variant. However, it is yet to be seen whether Samsung would release the alleged Galaxy Note 3 in all major markets. Samsung recently announced that the Galaxy Note 3touched the 10 million units shipped mark. According to Samsung, the Galaxy Note 3 took two months to reach this milestone mark, while Samsung Galaxy Note II took four months, and the original Galaxy Note took nine months.
A recent report suggested that Samsung is working on a Galaxy Grand Lite smartphone alongside the Galaxy Note 3 Lite and have been believed release the devices at MWC 2014.
Samsung is also believed to be working on its most affordable Galaxy tablet yet, believed to be called the Galaxy Tab 3 Lite, in January next year.
google-android-4.4.2-update-rolling-635.jpg
Within weeks of the Android 4.4.1 update rolling out to Nexus 5 smartphones, Google has now started rolling out a new update dubbed Android 4.4.2 for the Nexus devices (Nexus 4Nexus 5, Nexus 7 and Nexus 10). The Android 4.4.2 update comes with build number KOT49H and is supposedly a minor update for the Nexus device range. Notably, the Android 4.4.2 update will be accessible OTA (over-the-air).

One of our readers, Jubin Mathai, claims to have received the Android 4.4.2 update for his Nexus 5 smartphone in India, indicating the update has started rolling out for some Nexus devices (maybe just the Nexus 5) in the country. Mathai wrote on Twitter, "My #Nexus5 got updated today!"

The size of the Android 4.4.2 update varies: on the Nexus 5, the update is about 54MB, while on the Nexus 7 tablet, the update is about 40MB. The Android 4.4.2 update brings system enhancements for the entire Nexus device range. Specifically, on the Nexus 7, the Android 4.4.2 system update claims to bring performance, stability and bug fixes.
On the other hand, the Nexus 5's Android 4.4.2 update notification surprisingly claims to bring camera improvements (faster shooting, less shutter lag and motion blur, more accurate focusing and exposures, better white balancing for true colours) and performance improvements and bug fixes.
This is surprising, as earlier this month, Google had announced the Android 4.4.1 update for the Nexus 5, which had primarily introduced camera enhancements for the smartphone. The Android 4.4.1 update brought camera improvements like faster focussing, particularly in low light situations; quicker white balancing for truer colours; ability to pinch-zoom the viewfinder in HDR+ mode and less shutter lag.
In November, almost two weeks after the release of the operating system, Google officially rolled out the Android 4.4 KitKat update for its Nexus 7 and Nexus 10 tablets.
However, it took some time for the Android 4.4 KitKat update to reach Indian shores as Nexus 4 andNexus 7 users reportedly only received the update in the last week of November.

Following the lead of Samsung, HTC and Sony, LG could be the next to join the mini-variant segment, with the expected launch of the rumoured new LG G2 mini.
Tech Blog in a report has claimed that LG is working on a mini variant of the 2013 flagship smartphone, the LG G2, believed to be dubbed LG G2 mini. However, the report suggests that the name LG G2 mini is not the official name and could be changed when launched.
On the specifications front, the report claims that the alleged LG G2 mini could bear similarities with its elder sibling in terms of chipset, and RAM.
As per the report, the alleged LG G2 mini would be powered by a Snapdragon 800 chipset, the same seen on the LG G2. Other specifications include 2GB of RAM, and a 4.7-inch display, although the report couldn't confirm the resolution of the display.
The report further speculates that LG might launch the alleged LG G2 mini at CES 2014 in January at Las Vegas. Unfortunately, there is no word on the design of the alleged LG G2 mini, whether it would also feature the power buttons and the volume rocker at the back of the phone like the G2.
LG launched the LG G2 globally back in August. The LG G2 features a 5.2-inch full-HD (1080x1920) display, with a pixel density of 423ppi. It is powered by Qualcomm's quad-core Snapdragon 800 processor that's clocked at 2.26GHz. The device comes with 2GB of RAM and offers 16GB and 32GB storage options.
