Ever since Nokia tied up with Microsoft for launching Windows Phones, the Finnish handset maker has been a major player for the platform. Now a Windows Phone statistics report by AdDuplex for November 2013 has revealed that Nokia dominates the platform with 90 percent market share. Its closest competitor, HTC follows at 7 percent share, while Samsung and Huawei have 1.8 and 1.3 percent market share each, respectively. The report is based on data collected from 2,087 Windows Phone apps running AdDuplex SDK v.2.
The report notes, "It's undeniable that Nokia "owns" Windows Phone device market and it has reached a new milestone this month. 9 out of 10 Windows Phone 8 devices in use are made by Nokia." Further, the report clearly reveals that Nokia's budget smartphone, the Lumia 520 has been the most popular Windows Phone with 26.5 percent market share globally. Notably, the recently unveiled Nokia Lumia 1520 phablet comes at nineteenth position in the Windows Phone 8 chart.

The report also includes Windows Phone devices data for the Indian market which shows the Lumia 520 leading with 43.4 percent, and the Lumia 720 following with 12.7 percent. The report said, "We continue to cover India every month, even though it's getting less interesting lately. The only change worth mentioning is Lumia 625 jumping from #8 to #4 with 5.9%." Other countries included in the report are Australia, France, Germany, Italy, Mexico, Vietnam, UK and US

In addition, the report also shows Windows Phone 7's market share which stands at 24.7 percent while Windows Phone 8 has 75.3 percent. The report states, "3 out of 4 Windows Phones out there run Windows Phone 8 now."
Nokia's strategy of pushing Lumia smartphones in various price segments has helped the company in taking lead in terms of global Windows Phone market share.
Earlier this month, research firm Gartner claimed that of the smartphones sold in Q3 2013, 81.9 percent were running on Google's mobile platform Android, while 12.1 percent used Apple's iOS and 3.6 percent were on Microsoft's Windows Phone.

Nokia was recently rumoured to be working on a smartphone dubbed Moneypenny, supposedly among the first devices to run Windows Phone Blue, aka Windows Phone 8.1. Now, a new rumour suggests that the Finnish major is also planning to release a dual-SIM variant of the Moneypenny smartphone.
Phone tipster @evleaks said on Twitter, "Nokia planning a dual-SIM version of Windows Phone Blue-powered Moneypenny." The tweet hints that Nokia might release two variants of the alleged Moneypenny smartphone targeted at different markets.

Earlier this month, a report revealed that two Nokia smartphones, codenamed Goldfinger and Moneypenny, would be the first smartphones to run Windows Phone Blue. Interestingly, both the alleged Nokia Goldfinger and Moneypenny smartphones codenames are linked to the James Bond movies.

In addition, the report claimed that out of the two Nokia phones, Goldfinger was the higher-end device. The report also suggested that the rumoured Goldfinger smartphone would feature Nokia's '3D Touch' technology, which would let users navigate the touchscreen interface without actually touching the display, while other gestures under consideration included flipping and scrolling. The report also speculated that Microsoft might reveal the Windows Phone 8.1 update at MWC 2014.

Earlier this week, the alleged Nokia Normandy and an unnamed Asha device were purportedly leaked in renders. The leaked render revealed the phone codenamed Normandy in Red, and showed the device's front and rear panel in full glory. The leaked render suggested that Nokia might be gearing up to bring the Lumia design to Asha phones with the alleged Nokia Normandy. While the second leaked render showed a completely revamped Asha full-touch phone that didn't bear any codename.

Prior to this, a leak claimed that a dual-SIM variant of the Nokia Lumia 720 is in the works.

For its upcoming mid-range smartphones, HTC will be using chipsets from players other than its long-time partner, Qualcomm, to counter competition from affordable handset manufacturers, as confirmed by a company executive.
Focus Taiwan has cited Jack Tong, HTC's head of China and North Asia, who shed some light on the company's plans for its upcoming mid-range smartphones.

According to Tong, the Taiwanese handset maker will start pricing its high-end smartphones at a more affordable level. Coming to the company's mid-range smartphones, Tong revealed that the three mid-range Desire smartphones the company launched on Wednesday, are using chips from ST-Ericsson, Spreadtrum and Broadcom, instead of Qualcomm.

Specifically, the HTC Desire 501 is powered by ST-Ericsson's U8520 dual-core processor, the Desire 601 dual-SIM is powered by Broadcom's Java quad-core processor, and the Desire 700 dual-SIM is powered by Spreadtrum's Shark quad-core processor.

"HTC will evaluate the situation. If most players in the industry are seeking high performance to cost, then we would not be able to ignore such a trend despite good design and applications," Tong told Focus Taiwan.

A recent report revealed that the Taiwanese smartphone maker would slash costs of its devices by nearly a quarter, and plans to sell cheaper devices in a bid to bounce back to profit in the October-December period.
